A Cautionary Tale of Dating OnlineSometimes it takes a cautionary tale to drive a point home about the principle of looking out for yourself when meeting potential dates online or off, whether you're on an online dating site or not, should not come as new information to anyone. Further, it is important to at least stay on your toes during any kind of dating process, especially when there is money involved, no matter where you might have met this prospective mate.
So goes the tale of one Marge Scull, a south Florida woman that was taken for a large portion of her life savings by a man that pretended to court her but in reality had a wife and family of his own in on the scam. According to Scull, the man in question was given a Mercedes and a variety of loans over the course of their relationship, loans he hasn't repaid.
It is perhaps these very stories that has given True.com the popularity that it has based off of the service's policy of running background checks on all new applicants to ensure that they are in fact single and without a felony conviction. That kind of search would have likely caught the wife that Ronald Hathaway, perpetrator of the scam, kept at home. However, no matter if you are dating through an online matchmaking service or simply a friend of a friend, any time a loan or gift comes into play, it is best to be cautious.
That might seem like a crass card to be played during what should be a fun dating experience, but it is through the trust that develops over the course of a relationship that someone can be taken advantage of. True.com and online dating sites like it offer a bit of protection in that regard, but common sense and a little trepidation can go a long way towards protecting yourself online or off.
