Chinese Singles Seeking Love OnlineIn many ways, the sexual revolution of the 1960's and the Internet Dating explosion that's happening in the modern day have spoiled Americans. Both movements have instilled people with an expanded sense of freedom and intense independence when it comes to intimacy and sex. Many of us have become so jaded, in fact, that the idea of parental and societal expectations wielding a strong influence over our choice of mates seems rather archaic.
But this is exactly the kind of environment that has prevailed in China until quite recently. Chinese men and women face a dual challenge: finding dating partners who they'd be willing to marry, and also winning the approval of their parents for said partners. This means that Chinese singles have to worry about a lot of factors that others don't stress so much. For example, a woman must be concerned that her prospective date is at least as successful, career-wise, as she is. Also, she will want to find a mate while she is still considered to be of a young age. In China, single women are generally thought to be less desirable after the age of twenty-six.
As John Boudreau reports in the article entitled "Love is serious business among Chinese singles", many online dating services are keen on tapping a hitherto-unclaimed resource: China's 130 million web users. The idea has caused a stir of excitement, but there have been a few obstacles that have thus far prevented it from becoming a reality. For one, the young people of China haven't broken from the yoke of parental expectations to the extent that, say, Americans have. Also, the added criterion that they're obliged to consider when searching for a date, as explained earlier, significantly narrows their dating choices. Therefore, not enough people in China take advantage of online resources to really make it profitable yet for online personals sites; and even those that do often have a hard time finding what they're looking for.
Recent trends in the country, however, suggest that its young people are growing more independent in their search for romance and marriage, and those who earn their livelihood by helping people pair up online remain hopeful that China will soon join the e-dating revolution.
