A Nice Date or A Blind Date?Blind dates can be an interesting way to spend your time, however, they invariably have less of a success rate than dates you've found on your own because it seems like the only matchmaking criteria your friends and family find necessary to try to make the connection for you is that he or she is "a nice person." What does that really mean, "a nice person?" How many people are crabby or nasty all the time? That doesn't mean much in terms of making him or her a good dating partner. It should be a given - your friends and family shouldn't set you up with someone who's crabby and nasty! Your well-meaning matchmakers might also point out that you went to the same school or like the same sport, but that doesn't mean you'll have anything else to talk about all evening. So should you agree to a blind date with "a nice person" without knowing anything else about him or her? If you trust that your personal Cupid took the time to look at the tastes and personalities of both of you, and you welcome an afternoon or evening with a perfect stranger, go for it. It certainly takes a lot of the legwork out of locating a date. Otherwise, ask questions such as why they think you'll get along, why they think that your personalities will mesh, and how long they have known him or her. Also think about things that were not said about the potential date and ask for more information. You may be told that your intended 'really likes' golf, but that could go to two extremes or anywhere in the middle: does he enjoy it casually, or is he obsessed with it? Would he sell his soul to get in a good game of golf on a day when you'd rather be at the lake or the beach? If the answers to these questions pique your interest, arrange for a phone conversation, and if the potential date still sounds interesting, go ahead and meet. In the end, blind dates can provide a bit of casual chat over a meal, they can put you to sleep, or they can be the beginning of a great dating relationship... you just never know!
