The Lexicon of Dating

If a man signs off a message to his woman saying "AML", she is likely to respond with "H&Ks". If all this sounds Greek to you, you are yet to step on to the texting bandwagon. AML is an abbreviation for "All my love" and H&Ks means "Hugs and Kisses", and gen-next is speeding down the internet highway or flying across cellular networks armed with a lexicon of just such short forms.

Language itself is evolving with the gradual inclusion of such abbreviated text chat or message terms. This is even growing to an extent where people are beginning to think in these terms, and they are well on their way to consider sending kisses on the e-mail quite equal to kissing in real life. Relationships are forged on the web, and in a sometimes heartless world, even broken up with a simple text message.

As a recent dating article points out, more and more singles have begun to feel that technology has made our love lives easier. While this is true, it might be an exaggeration to think that the use of technology can replace real living. A relationship is based on trust and emotion, and while text messaging and emails are an efficient and cheap way to get to know each other, they cannot replace real human communication.

Because a phone conversation is able to convey many more nuances than a hastily typed out text, more dating services are offering phone service as part of their subscription package. After all, you can not only understand what is said in a phone conversation, but also a lot that is left unsaid. But nothing can beat communicating face-to-face, where a good ninety percent of the communication is body language, and not vocal at all.

So, the next time you whip out your phone and send off a text which goes something like "Hi QT, 143's, B4N", when you actually mean "Hi Cutie, I love You, Bye For now", try and place a call instead. Even better, try and meet up with your dating partner. After all, as you know yourself, a hug and a kiss in real life feel much better than H&Ks on a text message.
