Velvet Rope For Online Dating: Are You Hot Enough?We have all seen the dance club that has the long line and the velvet rope that is designed to keep out the average looking people in favor for the hottest of the hot. The club scene, like many aspects of single life, caters to the truly attractive among us, offering the best perks to those that bring the sexy, fit, super-attractive aura. HotEnough.org has taken that same principle and applied it to online dating by only allowing access to the web site for singles that are rated an 8 or above on a 10 point scale of attractiveness by the already existing members of the site. Aside from the fact that the service is steeped in an elitist view of what makes two people compatible, it is an entirely flawed business model that a recent MSNBC article is accurate to point out. The super attractive of the species can find someone to date by simply walking out of the house and bumping into someone. Pooling the most attractive singles possible sounds like a good idea, but the simple fact is that online personals might be desirable for some while the vast majority of these dating elite don't need the extra help. Sure, the online dating world is increasingly becoming crowded with niche matchmaking sites, but the most successful websites cater to niches that are either involved in an issue that is very important to its members (such as those based on vegan dating) or cater to a niche where the particular trait in question makes people more compatible with those that share that passion (faith-based dating sites and rural dating sites, for example.) While creating a niche based on the most attractive people possible may seem like a good idea, it misses the point of what internet dating is for. Personals sites offer the opportunity to explore a new way to meet someone for those that aren't content with hoping to bump into someone by chance, not the super-attractive among us that trip over potential relationships on their stroll to the supermarket.
