Why Online Singles eMail The People They DoFor some singles, pinning down a "type" for a potential mate is an easy thing to do. The skin color, the hair color, the eye color, all of them roll off of the person's tongue as if the perfect date was standing right there. For others, picking a type is an impossible exercise as a woman or a man of all types can be attractive, it's in the details where connections are made. Both sides of the spectrum, according to a recent online dating study, are perfectly valid positions, but internet singles have clear tendencies that online profiles can bring out.
One of the more interesting tidbits turned up by that study and others centers on the advantages tall men see both in the workplace and in the online space. Though tall men (those over 6 foot) make up only 15 percent of the American population, those same tall men make up 58 percent of the CEOs of Fortune 500 companies. It seems that the popularity of tall men in CEO positions is approximate to the popularity of tall men with women.
By breaking down online daters strictly by height and income, the study in question was able to calculate how much extra income was necessary for shorter men to land a potential date. Though the results are of course not an exact science and there are always many factors involved, height truly matters. If the baseline is 5'11" (as it was for the group looked at in the study) and the median income is $86,500, a 5'6" man would need an income of $237,500 to make up the difference. By contrast, a 6'2" man would only need to make $32,500.
The moral of the story? Well, there likely isn't one other than the common sense position that tall men have an advantage in the dating world. Subconscious or not, looking up to a man feels right to many women and indeed tall men on some level project the image of power and confidence. How quickly do your eyes travel to the height section of your favorite online personals website's profiles? Posted by eDatingCentral.com May 3, 2007 6:23 pm
