1 in 4 Online Singles Condone A Fib or Two

According to a poll recently released by Engage.com, one in four online dating singles claim that telling an innocent lie is perfectly acceptable during online communication. For those of you that have been burned by meeting someone that had posted a photo that either wasn't them, showed your prospective mate 15 to 20 pounds ago or simply didn't live up to the in person meeting, you have felt this 24 percent in full force.

While more single men (30 percent) than woman (19 percent) condoned the practice of telling a lie here and there during online courtship, both figures are a troubling trend when you do the math. If you go through 20 online profiles during one pass of a dating website, that means that either four women or six men lied about something on their profile. That's not exactly a testament to the reliability of the singles you are looking to meet out there.

Telling a lie about income was the most common fib, but lies concerning body type, age and height followed quickly behind, suggesting that the 6'4" tall, dark and handsome man you spotted online with a yearly income of $100,000 or above may just be a 5'11" man with a penchant for donuts and a $20,000 position. Obviously, this is an extreme case but it underscores the skeptical nature when it comes to meeting some singles online.

The poll also revealed more acceptable practices like ignoring emails from that troll that just messaged you and sending out lazy, but often effective one line emails to provoke further response. Tools like these are generally harmless and even though they might come off as a bit lazy, they certainly don't do any actual harm.

However, when 12 percent of respondents claim that retouching a photo is ok, it may be time to wonder just how authentic the legs on HotLegs24 really are. Of course, all of this lying is something that you should discover over the course of making a real connection. Just because one in four might tell a white lie, that is no reason to get discouraged. Three out of four are telling the truth and if you work to make real connections that are meaningful, you will quickly get through any of the lies and straight into the truths you're looking for on the search for the perfect mate.
