The Advantages of Group Dating

Most of us, at least once in our lives, have tasted the awkwardness of a first date that goes awry right from the get-go. There are few experiences in life more embarrassing than having to tough out a dinner date or a quick meet over coffee with someone with whom we can find no chemistry or common ground. Sometimes we can find an excuse to call it an early night. Sometimes we can gather the courage to say, "It's obvious this is not going to pan out". Usually, though, we suffer through the forced smiles and unsettling silences until we get home, and then simply don't bother to call the person again.

Group dating have always provided a viable alternative to one-on-one scenarios for one simple reason: more people present makes for fewer painful lapses in conversation. Discovering that you're hopelessly mismatched with the person you're out with doesn't have to be such a disaster because you can still make the most of the evening with people whom you know and enjoy being around with.

Of course, one's friends may not always relish the prospect of sitting in on a group date. Indeed, they may look forward to it as much as they would an opportunity to be designated driver for a night out on the town. Our dates may not particularly like our friends, either. But since there's no foolproof plan for a thoroughly satisfying social encounter, group dating can transform a potentially disastrous situation into a pleasant – or at least merely awkward – one.

As Emilie Le Beau writes in her Chicago Tribune article, "Two's company...three or more is a date", this can be especially true for young singles who aren't really prepared for the intensity of a one-on-one date. Going out with accompanying friends affords one the opportunity to get a feel for a potential romantic interest without the pressure of the outing having to produce instant fireworks; which, as many of us have learned from uncomfortable experience, first dates oftentimes do not.
