JDate’s Most Recent EvolutionAccording to the dating site's creators, JDate did not include gay or lesbian search options at launch in 1997 because of a lack of interest in the feature. Now, ten years later, the ability for Jewish men to find other gay Jewish men (and Jewish women to meet other Jewish women) has been added into the site as part of a recent wave of changes aimed at making this Jewish personals site more accessible and thus, more profitable.
As one of the most prominent niche online dating websites, JDate has seen significant growth and with that growth, the site has moved to become more inclusive to new members. Today, for example, singles can be found on JDate that are in fact not Jewish, a departure from the early makeup of the dating pool on the site. These goals are presumably aimed at holding on to the niche nature that represents the site's core user base while still providing room for growth.
For a Jewish personals site like JDate, that makes perfect sense. Even if JDate strictly catered to Jewish singles only, the interests among those Jewish daters would be so diverse that offering up new search options and profile designations would tap into that diversity without diluting the original mission of the site. In that vein, gay Jewish singles can now use the site, as can those looking to convert to Judaism (another new search category).
As niche dating sites continue to look for new ways to grow, they will see just as JDate did that there are ways to expand the user base without compromising what brought the original daters to the website in the first place. Jewish singles can still find someone special online through JDate, the site has simply added a capacity to accommodate more interests and to that end, JDate is a great example of how niche online sites will grow in an increasingly crowded online dating space.
