LavaLife’s Good, Bad & UglyIt is always an interesting prospect when singles without much experience in online dating tries their hand at a particular service as part of a journalistic exercise in exploring online dating. One such journalist did just that with LavaLife, a prominent online dating site in the United States and, according to the filed article, the most popular online dating site in Canada. The journalist's experience with the dating site and the experiences of those he interviewed revealed a very mixed bag for the LavaLife service, one of the rare online personals sites that charges per communication instead of on a monthly basis like most sites. This means that less cost can be incurred by those looking to only send a few messages a month, but also means that those not serious about finding a match are not filtered out by a monthly charge. This is especially true in the recounted tale of one female that used the service. With every logon, the young woman was bombarded with messages from the male population on the service, some of them not printable here and most of them unwanted. While a predominance of men on an online dating service is not the most uncommon trait, the deluge of personal messages at first logon is discouraging to single men looking to actually meet women and not proposition them within five minutes of looking at a profile. While the article does detail some successful relationships that resulted from this singles site and its passionate fan base, the crux of the article is based on the pay system that allows for more communication from those not serious about finding someone, a potentially discouraging factor to people, single women in particular, that aren't always willing to bare their souls in an online profile. These experiences are of course perhaps not indicative of the dating service as a whole, but the pay system does present some interesting dynamics that might not be present on other more traditional online dating sites.
