The Stigma of Dating Older WomenOne of the drawbacks of searching for potential romantic partners online is the tendency for our initial contacts to be brief. While it's true that many dating sites allow one to post extensive bios, many singles won't read these unless they are first enticed by one's much shorter – and, often, fairly generalized – profile. Because of space constraints, profiles are usually structured around certain key categories so that web browsers can obtain a lot of information about a person at a glance. One of the categories that singles pay a fair amount of attention to is the age bracket. Unfortunately, most of us have some deep-seated beliefs about age and aging. We may pass over a certain person's profile because they fall into a higher age bracket than what we consider our ideal – and therefore never have a chance to learn that the assumptions we made about the person were erroneous. One of the prevailing beliefs, as Marianne Jacobbi writes in a Boston Globe article entitled "Expiration Dating", is that women in the higher age demographic – i.e., 55 and older – have little or no interest in sex. Older men, so the reasoning goes, may long for companionship with women of comparable age; but because they also desire intimacy, they'll opt for someone younger, believing that such a person will be more sensual and responsive. There's really no available evidence that one could cite to prove that older women lose their sexual drive any more readily than men do. As with so many other issues that arise in the midst of intimacy, this is a personal matter that varies from person to person. Unfortunately, some singles tend to rely – at least a little – on generalizations when they're browsing through the veritable jungle of potential dating partners. In skipping over a certain person the moment their eyes scan that "55 +" tag, they may be turning their back on someone who might have made a wonderful – and, quite possibly, sexually open – partner.
