Baby Boomers Plunge Back Into DatingThe baby boom generation has been a marketer's dream for decades as the swell in the population means a bigger group to market to and a bigger group with spending power. As the baby boomer generation has aged, the products targeted to the group have also changed. Today, the baby boom generation ranges in age from the mid-40s to mid 60s, a time when many are finding the need to reenter the dating scene either because of the loss of a spouse or divorce.
A recent article published by the Chicago Sun Times tackled this demographic, exploring what the trials and tribulations are for a senior single back on the dating market. Like those of any age, the difficulty of meeting singles is a hurdle, but online dating have filled in that gap somewhat by continuing to offer services aimed directly at what the article describes as Match.com's most lucrative demographic.
The challenge here is the resistance among senior singles that have lost a partner (one third of women over 55 have lost a spouse and remain without one) to get back into the dating game. The article describes a number of reasons, including a feeling that seeing someone new would be tantamount to cheating on a deceased spouse.
While it is certainly important to online dating services to bring in some of these older daters, it is important to anyone in the baby boom generation or beyond to give love and romance another chance. Even if the goal for many seniors, as the article states, is not necessarily to get married again but instead to simply find someone to enjoy time with, online dating seem a perfect way to offer a low-pressure method to test out the dating waters. There is much to be gained by older singles taking a chance and using an online dating website as a first step towards finding that relationship and romantic spark.
