Although most online dating services offer private email exchanges, instant messaging and live video chats, even the staunchest of online dating advocates would tell you that those forms of online interaction can only take you so far when trying to decide if someone is right for you. Social groups like the one in the article help bridge that gap, even if it is bridged through a somewhat staged environment.
