Stop Squirming, You're Sending Mixed SignalsSingle women and men are taught by society at an early age that being polite is generally a positive personality trait. Online singles have perhaps exercised this level of politeness by sending a few nice email replies to someone even though they are less than interested in actually pursuing anything further. This is especially true on a first date when one can usually tell whether or not they are interested right off the bat, even though the bulk of the date is still yet to be ventured into.
So, as a man or woman trying to decipher whether someone is simply being polite, body language becomes the go-to truth serum that usually reveal what politeness has hidden. As a recent article suggests, there are some tried and true methods for deciphering body language. Remember, these things are subconscious and unless you are actively and constantly thinking about the way your arms are folded or your body is tilted, you too have participated in this unspoken ritual of expression.
If you're on a date and sitting across the table is a man or woman with folded arms, a body that is slanted away from you, eyes that won't rest on you, a reluctance to touch you and maybe even a yawn every now and again, you can probably grab the check and still catch the end of your favorite television program at home. You're not going to miss anything here as all the non-verbal cues point to a bored, disinterested date.
On the other hand, if your date has a hand that sometimes rests on your shoulder, eyes the lock on to yours, a habit of lightly touching themselves when listening to you speak and no indication that anything else is pressing or important, online dating has come through for you. Have another drink, relax and at the very least, you can be sure your date is listening to your story about the time you got your foot caught in your car door. Ah, romance.
