America Got OnlineIf you were like the many millions of people across the United States, or even across the world, you threw away at least one AOL free CD. You may have even thrown one CD away every week! AOL and their online services exploded during the 1990's as the Internet and its popularity grew. Indirectly, AOL is responsible for creating the revolution of online dating. AOL became popular because of their range of chat rooms. They had themed chat rooms for specific age groups, hobbies, regions and sexual orientation. But even with their ingenious creation of chat rooms to meet people from across the state, country and the world, they were limiting. AOL censored much of the content during discussions. So, with many people being dissatisfied with the censorship, they created their own websites, for dating, gays, lesbians and whatever specific niche they wanted. Without the AOL censor hanging over them. The websites sprang up by the dozens. They became more popular and had memberships in the thousands which grew to hundreds of thousands and millions over the years. Even without AOL pushing the censor buttons, online dating would have grown, in the gay, lesbian and heterosexual communities anyway. Everything else online has exploded, why wouldn't the dating realm too? Sites like gay.com simply realized the need for America to have a place to go and speak freely and did it first. Rural America might not have a large base of gay people, so by connecting them with an online community with a large base, they grew tenfold. People had a place where they fit in without being censored and they told their friends, as well as met other like-minded people to hook up with. Other business people took notice of the concept of dating online and merged into mainstream dating services with little or no censorship and had great results too. Did AOL create the online dating revolution? Maybe indirectly. Did the gay community create the online dating revolution? Maybe indirectly. Both indirect ways contributed to the creation of online dating, as we know it today. Anyone can find a dating website to fit their needs. All you have to do is look - online.
