The Attraction Factor

At some point, everyone wonders why certain singles decide to date each other. Studies reveal that the culture we are raised in creates a system of stereotypes that help give single men and women compatible matchmaking views based on appearance, intelligence and life goals. In addition, these stereotypes seek to preserve cultural identity by curtailing inter-racial attractions.

Almost every woman knows about the stereotypical male's obsession with a woman's face, legs and bust line. At the same time, women don't immediately narrow their choices to men that are at the top of their list for being physically attractive. In a sense, this creates an area of "give and take" established by society; or a common ground of understanding when two people meet for the first time.

Women tend to be attracted to men that show promising levels of money making ambition and the intelligence to succeed. Similar to level of interest in physical attraction, many societies still teach specific gender roles in relation to child rearing and family support. Once again, these societal stereotypes offer an unconscious assessment that guides how we choose a date.

Historically, it is the men that go into battle and begin to colonize foreign territories. Thus, it should come as no surprise that men have little tendency to evaluate a woman based on her racial origin. On the other hand, more than one proverb tells us that it is not the defeat of men that determines victory; it is the conquest of a society's women. Thus, women, in their role as mothers and social framework builders, are far more likely to choose a man of the same race as themselves.

For many, the main point of dating and romance is taking the first step to having and raising children. This creates enormous implications, not just for couples, but the society in which they live, and the entire composite face of humanity. Not surprisingly, societal interest in romantic outcomes has created a system of compatible relationship views between men and women that shape first impressions and dating choices.
