Internet Dating vs. College Hookups

College kids these days do not date anymore. Instead of dating, they just do hookups. They go in groups to places on- or off-campus and scout the scene for someone they like. Then they approach him or her to check them out, flirt and hopefully make a connection. Eventually, the pair decides to head off to somewhere quiet and private where they do everything from making out to some intimate NSA action between the sheets. It all really depends on the connection and attraction level.

This so-called hookup culture is typical of today's younger singles scene. This is not really surprising, given that the single 20 something crowd of today were raised to value instant gratification. Fastfood, instant messaging, mobile calls and Tweets – all these are signs of the times. When it comes to intimacy, what else is more fitting to quell the raging hormones of the young than hookups?

Hookups may assuage the hormones and gratify a basic need, but there are a few needs that hookups cannot satisfy. One of these is none other than the need to be connected with someone on a more meaningful level. It is a need that dating used to satisfy before it was supplanted by the hookup.

But even these hormone-laden and seemingly commitment-phobic college boys and girls of today feel the pressure of this need. However, dating or matchmaking in the old-fashioned sense just sounds archaic to them. On the other hand, online dating and web matchmaking does not.

Internet personals provide them the opportunity to find the bonds they are missing out in today's hookup culture. At the same time, it appeals to their need for instant gratification. It is no longer necessary to go out and get to know a person over the course of a few dates – a potential date's internet profile says it all. So, dating is not really dead, even for today's young people. It just took a different face and form.
