Abuse in Dating Amongst College StudentsWomen have come a long way in the past century; they have become co-contributors in our society, taking up challenging jobs and proving themselves equal if not better than men, in a wide diversity of fields. But this has not prevented them from being abused and a significant percentage of women in our society are still victims of verbal, emotional and even physical abuse. As a recent article finds out, this is not limited to the realms of marriage either, it is just as common on college and university campuses, where young women who have yet to come into their own are made to go through some of the worst treatments by the guys in their lives. One of the best ways to combat this is to make women and the people around them aware that abuse in modern society is a distinct possibility, and it is prudent for young college-going girls to learn to identify, fight and report incidents of dating violence. Abuse can take many forms, it could be your boyfriend telling you that you are worthless, which could emotionally affect you to such an extent as to cripple your self-confidence for life. It could be your significant other losing his cool and getting physically violent every once in a while and then feeling sorry about it and apologizing to you. Identifying abusive behavior is the first step towards protecting against it and getting it punished. Of course, a woman who loves her boyfriend might feel that getting hit or hurt once in a while is not a bad bargain if the man seems to love her in return, but it is time she was made aware of the reality of her relationship. This is precisely what some organizations are trying to achieve by running high-impact, simple to understand, and informative awareness campaigns on college campuses. Women need to realize that abuse must be reported and punished, and that it is not enough to just get out of an abusive relationship. An abusive man left loose in society the way he is, without any adverse publicity and punishment for his behavior, is a hazard to other women.
