Online Dating Becoming A Woman's Game? Before discussing the results of a recent study that shows what seems to show single women claiming a growing majority on many top online dating sites, a caveat is necessary. The study examined only traffic on the various sites included, not the actual membership tallies of each site. That said, what the study reveals shows an interesting trend among some singles dating sites to skew very heavily towards attracting women to at least browse the offerings.
eHarmony, one of the biggest online matchmaking sites was shown to attract two women for every one man to the site, a staggering statistic given the perception by many that the online dating world in general is dominated by men. Catholic Match was shown to nearly reach a three to one ratio in favor of women. Even if only some of those singles eventually turn into paid memberships, the traffic does not lie. The ratio changes from dating site to dating site, but almost universally, women are outnumbering men online.
That is certainly good news for men, though the architect of the Hitwise study, was quick to assert his own theory, speculating that men were put off by longer sign up processes, favoring a quick fix and easily searchable pictures of available women. That theory would certainly support the lack of men on eHarmony, known for its involved sign up process.
At the very least, no longer can online dating be thought of as a male-dominated pursuit as even the most cautious interpretation of the Hitwise survey's results would indicate something approximating an equal distribution of men and women. More than likely, matchmaking sites like eHarmony that focus on privacy measures and serious relationships will continue to see a higher quotient of women join the site, both good news for single men hoping to find their love online and bad news for men, just hoping for a few cute pictures to look at.
