Long Term Relationships Elusive For Any Orientation

UK gay and lesbian singles have found online dating to be one of the most effective ways to land a date. Because of the easy-to-use nature of online dating, a staggering number of gay singles, some 87 percent, say they've used either an online dating site or chat room in the last year. While a lower percentage, the 58 percent of lesbian singles that said the same thing is still an impressive share of the dating population and a testament to the adoption of online dating in England.

The study, outlined in a recent article on 24Dash.com, digs a bit deeper and finds that while many have used these online services, 18 percent of gay men and 27 percent of gay women have had serious relationships over that same time span. While that might seem like a big dip in regards to the staggering portion of the population using online dating sites, we all know that finding someone for a long-term relationship can be a tough endeavor and if over one in four women can do so with the help of an online service, that's nothing to ignore.

One response to those figures might be that these gay men and women must be devoting their time to only casual meetings and relationships. The study was smart enough to ask that question as well, turning up that only 16 percent of gay men and 18 percent of gay women used online dating sites in hopes of finding a short-term or casual relationship. The simple fact is, and this should come, as no shock to anyone of any gender, creed or color, is that finding that special someone is not an instantaneous process.

Online dating is clearly greasing the wheels of dating in the British gay and lesbian community, but there will always be barriers to the process. The article, for example, cites that 42 percent of men and 29 percent of women have said that shyness has been a barrier to meeting other gay singles. Online dating or not, obstacles like shyness and high standards (also mentioned in the article) play a role in the relationship process, no matter how widely used or adopted online dating becomes.
