Is MySpace Safe Enough?

MySpace, which has approximately 180 million profiles posted, began running "Sentinel SAFE" on May 2, 2007, software it created with Sentinel Tech Holding Corp. that is used to identify sexual predators from their social network. MySpace says that it has deleted 7,000 profiles posted by convicted sex criminals since Sentinel SAFE has been implemented, but that it saved information about those profiles for law enforcement officials.

This is a step forward, but according to North Carolina state attorney general Roy Cooper, more must be done to protect children from sexual predators, citing the fact that the data from MySpace does not include sexual offenders who have not yet been convicted of crimes, are using fake names, or are not registered with police. The United States has approximately 600,000 registered sex offenders.

Convicted sex offenders in the United States are already required to register their physical addresses with local police when they are released from custody. MySpace wants a new federal law put into place that would require them to register their e-mail addresses as well. It believes it would make it easier to screen sex offenders from membership websites used by young people. But how hard would it be to create a new email address to go around that?

MySpace chief security officer Hemanshu Nigam, a former US prosecutor who handled sex crimes, says, "What you are really seeing is a mirror of a physical community appearing online. It is a reflection of society, which is why we have to implement all the safety features and education we can."
