Is it true that love is only for the young? You only need to go to the movies or turn your TV set on to see Hollywood's version of it. But I say forget about Sex and the City or Desperate Housewives; those shows glorify the love affairs of women in their 30s and 40s. Hollywood producers have pulled the age bracket for romantic heroes and heroines way lower, what with the high school settings of TV shows like that Beverly Hills 90210 revival and One Tree Hill.

Does anyone care about the romantic health of those in their 50s and older? Better yet, can we imagine our grandmother or even our middle-aged mother cruising down the singles route and going out on dates? Perish the thought!

And yet, here is today's reality: online personals services are reporting that a big portion of their membership is made up of single men and women in their 60s and older. Senior dating is among the fastest growing segment in the internet dating industry. With that fact, do we still dare to say that true love is only for the young?

When we stop to think about it, this development in the web personals services sector is not really surprising. Today's seniors – the baby boomer generation – along with their youthful exuberance also have longer life expectancies. They also have more money and, thus, have a greater capacity to enjoy the years remaining to them. The most important fact of all is that they are either separated or widowed, and they are hungry for companionship.

The interesting thing about it all is that seniors are more likely to be successful when it comes to online matchmaking. Due to their wisdom and maturity, they know whom they want as a partner and they do not feel like wasting their time shopping around for dates, unlike most of the young ones around. So, do we still dare to say that true love is only for the young? Perish the thought. Love is ageless, whether you are 17 or 70.
