The Truth About Dating
Getting a date has become a breeze with internet dating: it is fast, discreet, effective and simple. This entices more and more singles to go online and find love, making an online dating website a very lucrative business. In fact, with so many new singles getting on the internet, this market is far from saturated and an increasing number of dating services are vying for a piece of the pie.
A better part of today's singles that uses technology to find love wants to find it fast, which can lead to problems afterwards. In the haste of finding the date of their dreams, a lot of singles sign up for a service only because they like a few profiles while browsing. Little or no attention goes to the pages that detail the privacy and use policies of the site.
But this is not always the smartest way, as the recent lawsuit against True.com proves. This lawsuit alleges that True.com continues to charge its subscribers after they have canceled memberships. The cancellation process is neither easy nor foolproof, and there have been complaints of ex-member credit cards being charged fees after membership expiry.
The lawsuit also alleges that the terms of the website do not adequately protect subscribers' interests. One of the policies retains claims to the subscriber's profile picture and information even after membership expiry. This means that True.com can sell or publish pictures and information belonging to members without informing or paying them at any point of time. This kind of policy may not be concurrent with individual privacy preferences.
Such alleged issues may not be limited to True.com alone. So, before subscribing to any dating website, it is better to play safe and check all the use and privacy legalities with a fine eye. Check it yourself if you are qualified, or get advice from someone who is. So yes, look for love online, but make sure your back is covered while you do it.
